Flags wave in Sukhbaatar Square among the crowd gathered while angry shouts fill the freezing air. Amid temperatures of minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit protesters could be heard shouting, “Enkhbold resign! Enkhbold, get out of Mongolia’s state!”
On December 27, 2018, demonstrators numbering in the thousands gather in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in protest of parliamentary speaker, Enkhbold Miyemgombo. It was alleged that Miyemgombo was the mastermind behind a scheme peddling off government positions for an estimated $23 million dollars.
Government corruption is commonplace in Mongolia. After seven decades of communist rule, Mongolia emerged as a democratic state in 1992. Since then however, political instability has plagued the country. As a democratic state, Mongolia’s government has survived 15 cabinets, each averaging out two years. Many suspect that problems such as heavy pollution and major health issues are rooted in politicians plundering the country’s resources.
As the yells of demonstrators dies down and the crowd thins out, one questions lingers. What does the future hold for Mongolia’s future?
