Celebrating a strike, Jillian Martin raises her arm during the Big Red Invitational on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Hollywood Bowl in Lincoln, Neb. A highly coveted recruit of the 2022 class, Martin was recruited by several major bowling programs but said she ultimately chose Nebraska because of the people. “I could see myself being here every single day,” Martin said. “I've enjoyed being able to learn from the people around me, grow with them and just develop those friendships. Knowing you have people around you to help you and pick you up when you're down has been huge for me. I think for us, we’re just trying to bring all the positive energy and have a good time.”

The Nebraska bowling team finished third in the NCAA bowling championships Saturday in Las Vegas. Freshman Jillian Martin helped the Huskers to their seventh championship bid,  and led the tournament with a scoring average of 239 and total pinfall of 717.

Title IX, a law that prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities, was passed in 1972. It opened the door for more women and girls to play and report on sports for the first time. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln added bowling as a varsity sport in 1997 and has won six NCAA Championships.
