Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to reflect committee assignments and leadership positions for state senators following the resignation of State Sen. Suzanne Geist.

Meet the state senators deciding policy and leading Nebraska’s legislative branch through 2024.

Nebraska’s current 49 state senators are among the most diverse in the state’s history with 18 women, six senators of color and two openly LGBTQ senators. The median age of the Legislature, at the start of the session, was 61 — the youngest senator was 26 while the oldest was 80.

The senators introduced 820 legislative bills and 95 resolutions in the 90-day 2023 session, as of April 14. Nine bills have been withdrawn by their introducers.

State Sen. Suzanne Geist resigned from the Legislature on April 6, citing her run for Lincoln mayor. Gov. Jim Pillen appointed State Sen. Carolyn Bosn to succeed Geist.

Geist sat on the Executive Board and Reference Committee and was chair of the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee. State Sen. Beau Ballard of Lincoln will succeed Geist as a member of the Executive Board and Reference Committee while State Sen. Mike Moser of Columbus is the new chair of Transportation and Telecommunications.

Bosn will serve on the Transportation and Telecommunications and Judiciary Committees.

Among the most notable legislation this session includes concealed carry permits (LB77), access for LGBTQ Nebraskans to health care (LB574 and LB810) and bathrooms or sporting teams (LB575), school funding (LB583 and LB753), voter ID (LB535), taxes (LB589 and LB754) and abortion (LB626).

Meet the 2023-24 legislative leadership here.

Information is included below on committee assignments, counties within a senator’s district (an asterisk denotes a partial county), legislation introduced by each senator this session, senators’ service in the Legislature and contact information by respective senators.
